Cyprus is a country with a very dry and hot climate. During the summer, starting in May all the way through to September there is little rain and high temperatures.
Planting any kind of produce is only possible when watered on a daily basis. Because of the intense heat, most of the water evaporates, and the soil dries out very quickly. The wind blows away the dried soil and all the micro organisms and fertile parts of it are gone. It is a devastating cycle that makes it hard to grow vegetables, fruits and any other produce, without intense labor and wasting much water in a land where this precious gift is scarce.
That is why we were thinking to implement a very effective method as soon as possible. We are going to cover all the soil with a thick layer of mulch (wood chips mixed with composting material). This is like a sponge keeping the moisture in, it is a protection from wind and burning sun, and it serves as a nutritious source for the soil as it slowly turns to compost. It is quiet amazing.
What we urgently need for that is a wood chipper. We have a lot of tree branches, bushes and greens on our property every year, that we just burn, but it hurts us doing that. The idea is to buy a pre – owned professional diesel chipper, and then offer to go around the villages and chip their branches and greens. Everybody is just burning it all, and once we can show them how well it works for our gardening and growing things, we will encourage them to use the mulch as well. We envision to turn this into a business venture that will generate income for the land development again.
